Wilbur and the Baby Factory

1972       Larisa Schubert

Young Wilbur Steele, a likable college protester, with perfect health and zero defects, unenthusiastically awaits his draft notice. When the official looking letter finally arrives summoning /1/rn into the service, it is really a phony sent by an underground organization looking to recruit him into a secret program bent on breeding a new race of genetically perfect people. Cleverly, and without telling /1/rn the real purpose of their organization, they maneuver Wilbur into signing a two-year contract, emphasizing the fact that there are no drop-outs.

The guiding genius behind The Baby Factory is Dr. Wednesday. But Wednesday is under extreme pressure from The Baby Factory's wealthy backer, W.W, who is determined to achieve his lofty goals; mainly, to sterilize the entire population of the world and at the same time breed a dar111ff new genetically perfect race.

Keeping the true purpose of their mission from Wilbur, they start a program to physically condition him and to chemically turn him on for this uncommon assignment. After a period of isolation, he is taken

to The Baby Factory as guest of honor at a formal dinner. Here, Wednesday and his co-workers inform h/in that it will be his task to father some two thousand children, more or less, during his two-year stay at The Baby Factory. Wilbur is speechless. After more indoctrination and chemical treatment lie is assigned to a conception wing where he reluctantly begins the process of impregnating his female patients. Soon, like the previous stud who was code-named 'The Bull,' Wilbur grows bitter, resentful, and uncooperative.

Meanwhile, Wednesday and his staff are plagued with other problems. One monumental one is 'The Bull'. He has been locked away in a secret place in The Baby Factory and all attempts to diffuse him have met wit/i failure. Still his needs must be attended to. A daily parade of women must be supplied. Worthless as a breeder and growing more dangerous and hostile, the staff meets to decide Ins fate. At the meeting, Wednesday receives a phone call ending the problem. 'The Bull' has taken his own life. Wilbur's own hostility increases. Wednesday prescribes ever larger doses of dangerous drugs and in a frightening moment while attempting conception with a patient Wilbur suffers a total breakdown.

Dr. Wednesday furloughs him for a time but when Wilbur recovers he refuses to perform, insisting upon an immediate discharge which is refused. Wilbur now plots his escape and he finds a way out of The Baby Factory through an elevator shaft. After three days in the woods, during which time he is suffering from delirium, he finds a hunter's locked camper and while attempting to break into it is shot by the owner.

Later, in a mountain hospital where Wilbur is recovering, Dr. Wednesday again confronts him. Now useless to the program and robbed of his manhood, Wednesday agrees to a discharge if Wilbur will remain silent about the activities of The Baby Factory. Wilbur is determined to destroy Wednesday and, as he is being taken; from the small hospital and placed in an ambulance, he grabs the sheriff's gun and shoots Wednesday. From that moment on, what happens is left to the imagination of the viewers.
