The Killing of Sister George

1975

Teaser Storyline for The Killing of Sister George

June Buckridge (BERYL REID) arrives at her London flat, lights a cigar, and announces, "They are going to murder me." "They can't," cries Alice "Childie" McNaught (SUSANNAH YORK), her doll-cuddling flat-mate. Actress June plays Sister George, lovable nurse on British TV's most popular daytime serial. Cast regulars include staunch friend Ted Baker (CYRIL DELEVANTI), sworn enemy Leo Lockhart (RONALD FRASER). Producer Freddie (HUGH PADDICK) daily battles to preserve this national institution. June skips rehearsal, gets drunk, terrifies two nuns in a taxi. At home, network executive Mrs. Mercy Croft (CORAL BROWNE) calls on June to demand she apologize to the Church for scaring the nuns.

Eyes on Alice, Mercy hints at cast changes, and indicates that June's popularity has slipped below Leo's. A dejected June seeks comfort from Betty (PATRICIA MEDINA), a prostitute who lives downstairs. When the script calls for George to get the flu and recover, June feels safe, and invites Mrs. Croft to a party at the lesbian-oriented Gateways Club.

There Mercy tells June that George will be killed in a highway crash next week. Crushed June runs out and Mercy pats Alice's shoulder with an offer of help. The 'murder' is televised, and June becomes impossible. She accuses Alice of having an affair with her boss Mr. Katz (MEIER TZELNIKER), only to find out that Alice has been seeing Mrs. Croft.

The TV Center gives a party for June and offers her a new job - as the voice of Clarabelle Cow on a kiddies' series.

An enraged June stalks out. When she finally gets home, she finds Mercy and Alice in bed together. A final dramatic confrontation results. June leaves the flat and returns to the TV stage where she wrecks the set, sinks to a bench and cries, "Moooo."
