Summer of Laura

1979       Kim Pope, Helen Madigan, Marsha Moon

a love story of a very special nature

Along a lonely beach on a summer-colony off the Long Island coast, a man walks slowly, reliving a summer, the Summer of Laura, when he was 19.

RICHIE, (David Hunter) has a friend on the island, GENE, (Eric Edwards), who is gregarious and mischievous. Like the more sensitive RICHIE, he too is 19. During that summer of awakening he loses his youthful desires and develops his manhood.

In their peeping Tom game of learning and looking at girls, GENE is the boldest, going after everything and anything with boobs and legs. while RICHIE, with his attitude of love and romance has been peeping on a slightly older woman, LAURA, introducing Marcia Moon, and her husband BOB, Wade Nichols, who have been making love before he goes off to Vietnam. NEVER TO RETURN.

RICHIE and GENE find a medical book on the Japanese method of "doing it" and take copious notes. Armed with their new facts they meet 2 girls, JUNE, (Helen Madigan),

and SHEILA, (Kim Pope). And it's off to the movies for an hilarious time of petting and playing amongst the popcorn. GENE is a complete success with the playful, outgoing JUNE, while RICHIE never quite makes it with shyer SHEILA.

On the way to the movies, RICHIE literally bumps into LAURA. She asks him if he'll help her with some chores the following day, he is totally flustered, afraid that she's seen him peeping, but agrees.

The following night JUNE and SHEILA are sitting around the pool, waiting for the two boys. JUNE is giving SHEILA a lecture on why she ought to lose her virginity. She finally shows her how to "loosen up those joints:' Afterwards, they discover GENE watching them. There ensues a three way free for all in and out of the pool.

RICHIE in the interim has gone to see his "Summer Goddess:' After knocking at the door, but getting no response, he walks in and finds a crumpled telegram on the floor.

"Bob Hayes has been killed in action' LAURA appears, lonely and vulnerable, but in control of her emotions. She moves towards him in a gesture of human contact. They begin to dance slowly. RICHIE knows he's giving her comfort, but that he can give her more, love. Which he does.

Next morning, walking and talking to GENE about the previous night's events, RICHIE decides to see LAURA again. To his dismay he finds she has moved out. In a note she bids him a tender goodbye: "Dear Richie, Thank you for last night. I won't try to explain what happened, because I know in time, you'll find a proper way in which to remember it. Your Laura:'

RICHIE, now grown up, stares down the beach, watching the ocean break, his voice rises:

"That summer we lost 5 frisbees, saved a girl from a silly snake, saw our first skin flick, and I lost my Laura." ... The sea rises and the past is over.
