Flesh and Lace

1965       Directed by Joe Sarno

Bev and Joan both work as drink hustlers in a strip joint owned by a young wheeler dealer hood named Dop. Dop is not satisfied with Bev who is somewhat naive and he wants to fire her, but Joan, who is more experienced and sophisticated comes to Bev's rescue by talking Dop out of it.

Rook, who is Joan's old boyfriend, appears after an absence of several months He comes back to pay off a gambling debt owed to Dop which he incurred during a losing streak in the nightly dice game in the back room of the strip joint. Now that Rook is back in the good graces of Dop, he forcibly moves himself into the apartment share by Bev and Joan.

Dop no longer able to cope with Bev's inadequacies as a hustler, fires her in angry resentment.

One day while walking in the neighborhood, Bev eyes a fluffy teddy bear in the window of a toy shop where she immediately strikes up a friendship with the amiable owner

Julian, who is also the local loan shark.

Rook while sleeping with Joan desires to make the simple sex-susceptible Bev his. After Joan falls asleep Rook goes to Bev's bed and seduces her. Bev and Rook carry on a furtive romance until they are caught by Joan who beats her rival unmercifully and throws her out of the shelter of the house.

In a state of rejection, Bev, beaten and half naked, remembers the comfort once experienced in the animal world of the toy shop and returns. The sympathetic Julian realizing her plight, gives her refuge in the living quarters beneath the shop. Julian's motherly attitude turns to one of lust and love after days of care and observation. Julian who no longer can quench the unsatiable Bev's thirst for sex unwillingly resorts to procuring male companions for her. This practice by Julian, is done to keep Bev's nympho-mania confined to the toy shop under his watchful eye.

Rook - again on a losing streak, tries to borrow money. In desperation he tells Joan he must leave town to escape Dop's attempts at collection. Joan, knowing through a casual remark of Bev's where Julian keeps his money, maps out a robbery. Rook takes Joan's gun without consulting her and breaks into the store taking the money. He is surprised by Bev with whom he tarries to embrace. Julian returns and the two men face each other. Joan, who has discovered her gun is missing, rushes to the shop and tries to stop Rook from using the gun. In the ensuing gun fight she is killed and Rook falls mortally wounded under a volley from Julian' s gun, as sirens signal the approach of the police. Stunned but safe in Julian's arms, Bev ruefully watches a mechanical toy roll down the floor past the bodies.
