The Howling

1980       Dee Wallace

Teaser Storyline for The Howling

Alone at night in a remote cabin, a beautiful young woman is suddenly startled to hear an unearthly shriek pierce the calm. The strange cry doesn't stop, so the woman takes flashlight in hand to go outside and explore. Stepping out into cold night air, she wonders what the shattering noise can be. It doesn't sound like an animal. It doesnt sound like a human.

When "THE HOWLING" starts.., the horror begins.

Avco Embassy's new occult thriller "THE HOWLING" is a Daniel H. Blatt production, directed by Joe Dante from a screenplay by John Sayles and Terence H. Winkless based on the bestselling book by Gary Brandner. The film was produced by Michael Finnell and Jack Conrad, with Daniel Blatt and Steven A. Lane serving as executive producers.

"THE HOWLING," a contemporary tale of a timeless horror, stars Dee Wallace, Patrick Macflee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, Kevin Mccarthy, John Carradine, Slim Pickens, and Elisabeth Brooks.

"THE HOWLING" explores the frightening, sinister world

of that supernatural creature that stalks human prey: the werewolf. The filmmakers have set out to tell, for the first time, the true story of how werewolves live within normal society, undetected until it is too late. As the screenplay for the film was being adapted from the novel, the filmmakers did extensive background research into the ancient folk lore that surrounds the werewolf.

They soon realized that earlier films had created and perpetuated a movie myth about the creatures that has nothing to do with what occult believers had perpetuated through the ages. 'THE HOWLING" explores and then explodes the myths surrounding the tragic and terrifying legend of men who become savage beasts. In fact, THE HOWLING" shows us that werewolves are, at most times, seemingly normal human beings. It will make audiences uncomfortably aware that if, indeed, they do exist--there is no ~ to know for sure. They are just like us. . .until that uncontrollable violent seizure transforms them. . .until the howling begins.

Gary Brandner's novel THE HOWLING" was first optioned for filming by Jack Conrad, who initially had planned to write and direct the project. He and partner Steven A. Lane took the property to producer Daniel H. Blatt, whose many film productions included "1 Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and, for TV, "Raid On Entebbe."
