Woman Like Satan, A

1959       Brigitte Bardot

Teaser Storyline for "A Woman Like Satan"

Don Mateo (Antonio Vilar) wealthy, handsome breeder of fighting bulls, with something of a reputation as a Don Juan, meets his match in a young girl, Eva (Brigitte Bardot) hardly more than a child, whom he meets during the festival in Seville called the Feria. Aroused by her mocking indifference, he makes inquiries and learns that she is the daughter of Stanislaus Marchand, (Jacques Manclair), a French writer of note, exiled, so the story goes, from France because of his political views, and now living in dreadful poverty in the slums of the Old City.

To support her poverty-striken father, who is her idol, Eva tries to get a job as a dancer in a low nightclub. She is rejected when the nightclub owner, Arabadjian, (Dario Moreno) hears that she is still innocent. "Do you want to get me into trouble?" he storms.

Don Mateo, who has an invalid wife, Maria Theresa, (Espanita Cortex) make a proposition to Eva. He will set her up

in style and comfort, and take care of her aged father. She turns him down.

An ugly scene in a restaurant, where Eva's father, Marchand, is exposed by the son of one of his victims as an informer for the Nazis in Paris, disillusions Eva. Lost in bitterness, she again seeks out the nightclub owner, lies to him calmly that she is no longer innocent, and gets the job as an erotic dancer.

Don Mateo discovers her there, renews his offer. She promises everything, gives nothing. Driven out of his senses, Don Mateo abandons his position, his wealth, his wife, to follow her into the provinces with a second-rate flamenco company. He is no longer the handsome and elegant aristocrat, but a seedy and dejected man.

When Don Mateo learns that Eva has been dancing in the nude at private performances, he goes completely mad, and tries to wreck the club at which she is performing. Police are called in, and battered and bleeding, his clothes torn, his pride shattered, Don Mateo is dragged away to the police station. Eva has completed his ruin.

But now that he has been humbled, Eva loves him. In the morning, when he is released, she is waiting at the police station for him. He is now like a small, hurt boy, to be soothed and mothered, and this role Eva can understand.

"The Kitten," "The Pout," or as she is sometimes alluded to, the world's greatest sexpot, will make her debut in a new film called "A Woman Like Satan," released by Lopert Films, Inc. In case you haven't realized it by now, we mean Brigitte Bardot. Yes, this gorgeous bundle of femininity who since her appearance in "And God Created Woman," has caused more of a stir among motion picture audiences than anyone since the flickers started to flicker is cast in a role and story tailor-made for her.

In the film, which is based on a novel by Pierre Louys, she plays the part of a young, French saucy flirt living in Spain. She has a devastating effect on men in general and one wealthy, married aristocrat in particular. The picture was directed by that superb film maker, Julien Duvivier, who also collaborated on the screenplay with Marcel Achard and Albert Valentin. The cast also stars Antonio Vilar and Dario Moreno.

Christine Gouze-Renal produced the picture which was filmed in Eastman Color. Filmed in Spain where the scene of the story is set, Duvivier made use of the colorful "Feria" five-day festival, hundreds of extras and the awe-inspiring scenes of country and city life.

Antonio Vilar enacts the role of the wealthy, suave gentleman who becomes so taken with Brigitte that lie is driven out of his senses. Dario Moreno plays a night club owner, who instinctively refuses to give Brigitte a job as dancer in his place but is cajoled into doing so.

Roger Hubert handled the photography and the music was composed by Jean Wiener and Jose Rocca.
